About the Conference

To highlight the centrality of education to Africa’s social and economic transformation, the African Union has dedicated 2024 as the year of Education. This was officially announced on September 20th, 2022, by the Chair of the African Union HE. President Macky Sall of Senegal. The move was intended to keep the momentum going from the commitments made by African heads of government to implement the recommendations committed during the Transforming Education Summit taking place in New York.

The AU Year of Education has inspired the East African Community (EAC) member states – in partnership with the Regional Education Learning Initiative Africa (RELI-Africa), the People’s Action for Learning (PAL) Network, the African Curriculum Association (ACA), with the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) to organise a regional conference and a call to action towards achieving holistic learning for all children in the region. The EAC Regional conference is, therefore, a call for joint action and for “restlessness in reflecting on learning as a pressing social justice issue in the region”. Rather than be-labour challenges, the conference adopts a solutions-focus, sharing innovations and evidence on what has worked in our context, with a strong call to commit for our children.

The conference will bring together a cross-section of participants from the 8 Partner States of the EAC as well as select participants from other African countries. The target audience will be high-level officials (Ministers or Principal Secretaries), policymakers (curriculum officers, ministry officials, parliamentarians), teachers, students, development partners, Civil society organisations, and research/academic institutions.

The participants will explore the following five objectives

  1. Engage in progressive dialogues on building education systems that are equipped to respond to the full diversity of learners’ needs and deliver quality education to improve learning outcomes for each child in the EAC.
  2. Discuss best practices for implementation of evidence-based innovative, feasible, and sustainable solutions for education transformation.
  3. Establish and inaugurate a regional network to strengthen the multi-sectoral partnerships for education in the EAC region.
  4. Enhance clarity on, share responses, and commit to fulfilling the right to education for the children left furthest behind in the EAC region.
  5. Come up with concrete actions, including the sustainability of this conference in the EAC.

The conference objectives will be realised through the following nine sub-themes

  • Stronger and Resilient Education Systems
  • Effective Implementation of Competency-Based Curricula
  • Strengthening teacher capacity to deliver Foundational Learning and Secondary Education using EdTech
  • 21st Century Competences for Each Child
  • Data and Accountability for SDG 4.1.1
  • Children Furthest Behind
  • Confronting the Language Question
  • Regional Strategies for Youth Employability
  • Harmonisation of TVET and Development of a Regional TVET Qualifications Framework
